My Oxblood Lillies made a real show in August 98!
My 35+ year old deep red Ox Blood lillies made the back yard showy again, but need dividing and spreading out.

And then, here come the Spider Lillies!
Just as old and really unique. I can't remember when I last saw them at a nursery.

But probably my newest favorite is the Bougain- villea.

In late July2K/early Aug 2K, , but should be much better next Aug(2001).

In late July2K/early Aug 2K, I resculpted the front of the bulb bed, dug out the dirt to 4 inches, cut out most of the roots, then screened the soil, added ammendments, and finally replanted the bulbs about 4 inches apart. I filled in some space with the dutch irises. All of this took about 2 to 3 hours a day, when the bed was in shadow, for two weeks. I created another bed for the small bulbs, and I'm still looking for places to plant the extras.

Besides being intertwined within the roots, the bulbs were tightly packed in three layers(or so). Imagine a layer of golf balls, then another layer on top, offset half a ball in each direction, then another layer, also offset. That is the way most of these bulbs were. Way overdue for spreading!!! And now was the only time. Some had flowers already at the top, ready to burst forth in the next month or so. And after that, they are leafed out through next May or so.

Not as showy this year, but should be much better next Aug(2001).
